Brazilian Studies Book 2016
As the students in Room 17 studied Brazil, we used our research to create an informational text. We hope you enjoy our work!
Social Studies 2014 - 2015
Our family heritage study has begun with the exploration of the book The Name Jar. This book has inspired curiosity! The students have begun to ponder the following questions: What do our names mean? Where does my family come from? How many nationalities make up my own history? And many more. Many students have explored the globe to find the places they have heard about in family discussions. It will be an amazing adventure this year as we learn about ourselves and others.
Click below to read our ebook written in 2013! All of the facts were researched by the children in Social Studies as they used informational texts to learn more about Asian Countries.
Social Studies 2013 - 2014
The children have created an amazing class constitution. Each student had a voice in the process of creating the rules and voting for each rule we thought we would need in our class this year. Much though went into the document before all of the rules were agreed upon. The most amazing thing about this constitution is the sheer size! Through the creative process the constitution grew into an entire ocean. The children decided to use ocean animals to represent the Core Ethical Values. The children then matched the animals to the values. The only place we had to hang the sizely work of art was the ceiling. The children had already decided to write the rules on bubbles, so when the constitution was voted to hang from the ceiling one student had the idea to make the bubbles have a clear edge when they hung from the chart. When things are not going well we simply look up to remind ourselves of the behaviors that will let us all learn, work together, and have fun!
This year the class is studying Asia as our major unit of Social Studies. The children have labeled their closet area tags with their names in Chinese characters. The Core Ethical Values on our Class Constitution are written in both English and Chinese Characters. We have enjoyed studying the map of Asia to learn more about the countries on the continent. The children have many questions about the Great Wall of China. The class has also enjoyed reading the Grace Lin story Dumpling Days. We are learning about the Asian culture as the main character Pacy discovers her roots on a family trip to Taiwan. The children will discover more about the Asian culture as the year goes continues. We will focus our studies on the countries of China, Japan, and India. Everyone is very excited to have a dance residency with Rachna Agrawal to learn more about the art and culture of India!
Social Studies in 2012 - 2013
This year the curricular focus in Social Studies is family heritage. Each student has begun to think about their family dynamics. We have enjoyed many stories about families this year, learning about traditions and customs. Through discussion the students have begun to ponder some of the aspects of their personal history that extend beyond themselves. Some are curious about family members, generations, recipes, countries of origin, artifacts, photographs, timelines, lifespans of relatives, and what was it like where our ancestors lived? As the year progresses each child will create a family heritage share. Every child will work with their family to explore where they have come from as they discover who they are and where they are going.
