We discussed the importance of place value in three-digit numbers, and identified the hundreds, tens, and ones place in our number. I explained that expanded notation/form is one way we can represent numbers. We broke our number into its expanded form: 500 + 40 + 1.
The students had fun practicing expanded notation/form with “The Expanded Notationator” – a tool I made from three styrofoam cups. The students composed three digit numbers, and used the “Expanded Notationator” to break the number down into its expanded form.
