This week in Reader’s Workshop, the students in Room 17 have been exploring the folk tale genre and practicing fluency by participating in Reader’s Theater. The students have been excited to read and perform two traditional West African stories: How Anansi Brought Stories to Earth, and The Spear Throwing Contest. The students have been learning and utilizing strategies to help them recite the stories with more expression and fluency. Puppets were used to help the students understand the concept of dialogue within the text. The puppets allowed the students to have a physical connection with the dialogue, which in turn, led to increased comprehension, expression, and fluency. The students are looking forward to performing the folk tales for their classmates in the coming days.
