This past Friday, John Lyman celebrated Read Across America Day and Dr. Seuss’ Birthday. Throughout the week, I used Dr. Seuss books as mentor texts to teach several reading and writing strategies.
On Thursday, we explored the use of emotions using Dr. Seuss’ My Many Colored Days. After reading the book and identifying the emotions, we discussed the importance of recognizing and using emotions in reading and writing. We explored this concept further through the use of music and dance. As I read the book a second time, I played music that accompanied the text. For each page, the music changed to reflect the specific emotion. I asked the students to interpret the emotions using movement, dance, and gestures. In the last segment of the dance, the students were able to choose a colored scarf that matched an emotion they were feeling. After the activity, the students were encouraged to incorporate emotions into their writing journals.
